5 LESSONS QUEEN SUGAR TAUGHT US

Queen Sugar was one of the nation’s top watched shows last week. It fell number 2 behind FX’s new show, Atlanta, but the power and genius behind this show proved to be unmatched. Everything from the direction to the story following of each of the siblings was amazing.

Queen Sugar follows three estranged siblings, who all live completely different lives, but must come together when tragedy hits the whole family. The premiere has taught us five things.

#5: “A SON WANTS HIS MOTHER.” -ERNEST

Black children are prone to being raised in single parent households. And while it is very common for that household to be run by a single mother, there are also single fathers holding down the fort. But the lesson to be learned in Queen Sugar is that no matter which parent it is, a parent is entitled to see their child, and it is healthiest for the child to be surrounded by both parents. Drugs and prisons are amongst the biggest factors in broken families in Black communities, but to be fair, that is only if you let it. Being strong for your child is making the best decisions for your child, and that is allowing the other parent to be in their life.

#4: “WHAT DID YOU DO? -CHARLEY

Denial is a plague that hits people across the world. We believe that when we know somebody to the fullest, they can do no real wrong, or they are incapable of committing certain acts. Rape being the most common. Charley’s immediate pour of emotion proves that when there is evidence, there is truth, and when you are caught on candid camera… you did it. Queen Sugarteaches us that just because you think you know someone doesn’t mean you do, and denying it does nothing but build upon rape culture. Rape is never the victims fault, and consent is not an unconscious body.

#3: “YOU JUST DO WHAT YOU WANT, DON’T YOU? THE REST OF US BE DAMNED.” -CHARLEY

This is simple. People are going to do what they want to do with little to know regard of what others think. It’s human nature, and we didn’t need Queen Sugar to tell us this, but thanks for the reminder!

#2: “WRESTLING WITH THE WORLD. A PLACE THAT AIN’T GOT NO PEDESTAL FOR YOU.” -VI

The world gives you no handouts. Babying a generation does nothing but release a series of fuck-ups. You coddle them and they never learn anything about the world because they were too busy up under you. Life is not a game, and even if it was, there would be no cheat codes. Whether you are fully equipped or not, the world comes at you with full force.

#1: “AND WE CERTAINLY DON’T PAY OUR RESPECTS WITH AMERICAN EXPRESS!” -NOVA

When you get money, sometimes you forget where you come from. It is very easy for us to lose ourselves in the midst of a lifestyle that we have wanted for a long time. Everything about us may change; our walk, our talk, and even our traditions. Nova made that clear when Charley tried to credit their fathers’ funeral, and pay for host for the repast. Never forget your humble beginnings.

To prove Queen Sugar‘s popularity, OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network renewed the show for a second season a month before it premiered. It is set to be an award-winning series, and you don’t want to miss it. Be sure to tune in Wednesday’s at 10|9C on OWN.
